Over vs. Overdue for a Comeback

I am pleased to share with you my first Over/Overdue for a Comeback list. The Overdue for a Comeback component of my list has been a long time in the making. Coolio has been on this list since 1999. It was with a heavy heart that I removed Whitney Houston from the list last fall.

The Over list, however, is constantly changing. You can't step into the same Over list twice. Once something has been Over long enough, I'm too over it to even acknowledge it on the list. And once something is THAT Over, it's due to wind up on the Overdue for a Comeback list before too long anyway.

I have painstakingly culled this list with the help of a highly discerning team of Internet experts. Thanks to those who helped me brainstorm.

Without further adieu, I present to you:

OVER
cupcakes*
mustaches
Talk Like a Pirate Day
kombucha
Keep Calm and Whatever Whatever
neons with neutrals
QR codes
SomeECards
Justin Timberlake (actor)
fake wayfarers with neon arms
bacon**

*Eating cupcakes will never be over, I'm just over it as a thing.

**Eating bacon will never be over. But can we please pick another tasty symbol of American decadence??

OVERDUE FOR A COMEBACK
Coolio
Debbie Gibson hats
Caboodles*
overalls
side ponytails
Planters Cheez Balls
body glitter
girl groups
Justin Timberlake (singer)
cottage cheese**
chokers

*Apparently I was not alone on this one

**I know you're scoffing, but who could have predicted the recent meteoric rise of Greek yogurt?

So if anyone needs me, I'll be listening to "Fantastic Voyage" and trying to figure out how to fit my Debbie Gibson hat over my side ponytail.

Discussion Question: What's Over and what's Overdue for a Comeback in your part of the world?

    1. I want to wear some with white jeans and a tube top like a Spice Girl. These really could only be a few seasons away. Creepers have already come and gone again!

  4. Katie I remember in high school you declared you had all the vests you wore as an elementary schooler and would wait as long as it took for them to come back. Lately, more than ever, I have wanted/needed to wear a vest. and every time, I think you, jealous of the vests you already own.

    1. tiny vests everywhere, but not a one will fit my chest.

Vests were on this list, but then I deleted it, because I love vests so much that I think they qualify as timeless

  5. There's a good chance much of this will come to pass. Let's follow the trend: In the 90s, we saw a resurgence of the late 60s/early 70s culture. The Aughts brought us into back to the 80s. This decade should bring us full swing back into the 90s...especially since Gen X and Y are approaching the 30ish decade, which is the decade of nostalgia.

    1. Totally agree. But you never know which 90s trends will resurface and which will never see the light of day again.

  7. You'd better not tell the kombucha I have growing in one of my back closets that it's "over." Didn't you see "Little Shop of Horrors?"

    1. OMG this would make an incredible horror movie! Hippies and hipsters consumed by their kombucha mother ;)

  8. Are all mustaches over? Or just seeing mustaches printed on every coffee mug, embroidered on every pillow, and at the end of every wedding photobooth prop stick?

Do real ones count if they're not ironic?

    1. Nick is growing a mustache and had to make the same distinction to him earlier. Just as eating bacon will never truly be Over, wearing a real mustache that grows out of your face will always have its place. But, say, tattooing a tiny mustache on your finger to hold it up to your nose--that is OVAH

  9. How have you not seen all the hipsters in their little pork pie style hats? They're already back. Brink the Blossom hat back, if you want a style challenge. Everything on the over list has BEEN over...you forgot steampunk. Cottage cheese never went away. I sport a side braid, and if you were a good burner you'd know Caboodles are the bomb for organizing yo' shit. Overalls look horrible on everybody, they can stay put. Kombucha's good. Liked it for...almost 20 years now. The fad can go, but it's tasty stuff.

    1. STEAMPUNK is an excellent addition to the Over list. And as a person who consumed about half of your cottage cheese at Transformus this year, I know that you are a fellow cottage cheese enthusiast. I'm just sayin it's due for its Big Moment.

I'll keep my overalls and you can keep you kombucha. ;)

  10. I like your Overs. You are so wise.

I am pretty sure side ponytails are officially back, girl! I see them on adult women, preschool girls, AND middle school girls here in the midwest... which COULD mean that they never left the midwest the first time... hmm.

Now I should go dig up my engineer overalls, don them, and wait for JT to drop an album... with a track featuring Coolio?
